Welcome Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway

We’re glad you’re here and we appreciate your interest in your park. We are currently working closely with the City of Asheville and residents to accomplish our mission.

Our Mission: To steward a sustainable greenway by engaging the community, improving equitable access, and conserving the native ecology of our natural, public green space.

Bear Creek Development Statement of Trustees

The Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway Board of Trustees share the communities’ anguish regarding the Bear Creek development adjacent to the Hominy Creek Greenway in West Asheville. The loss of tree cover; the impact on the riparian buffer and water quality; increased traffic; the harm to the landscape, wildlife habitat and viewshed; the loss of tranquility; are among a few of the prevailing concerns.

About the Greenway

The Hominy Creek Greenway is parkland on 14 acres of land along Hominy Creek in West Asheville. The land borders 2/3 mile of the northern side of Hominy Creek and Buttermilk Creek between Sand Hill Road and Hominy Creek Road. Its southern boundary is the creek and its northern boundary follows the back lot lines of the houses on Shelburne Road.

The land was logged by Edwin Carrier in the late 1880’s. It became the route for the West Asheville and Sulphur Springs Railway, a trolley line between Asheville and Carrier’s Sulphur Springs Hotel. The trolley was the first hydro-electric powered railroad in WNC.

The Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway holds the community vision for the park and has a partnership agreement with the City of Asheville designating our organization as stewards.

The Hominy Creek Greenway Master Plan created by the City of Asheville, the FOHCG, and by the community is below (Click this link to open a PDF file of the plan:   Hominy Creek Master Plan)
